Water and Blood

1 John 5:4, 6-15 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world— our faith. This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree. If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life. And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.
Sometimes you might feel forgotten or separated...like God doesn't care about you. Maybe you're unsure of your salvation.
Psalm 13:1-6 How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? Consider and answer me, O LORD my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, lest my enemy say, "I have prevailed over him," lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken. But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, because he has dealt bountifully with me.
When we feel like this, it's the enemy trying to confuse us. But these verses show us 3 witnesses of his promise: Spirit, Water, and Blood. These witnesses speak into your life like no one else can. There is hope for you no matter what...no matter your circumstances or your past...there is hope for you. The enemy tries to sow seeds of doubt and confusion in our lives...we ask if God will save us...the devil tries to close us off and make us isolated.

John 19:31-37 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. He who saw it has borne witness— his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth— that you also may believe. For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: "Not one of his bones will be broken." And again another Scripture says, "They will look on him whom they have pierced."
Blood and water flowed from Jesus side...water is significant here, it represents the Spirit. (Joel 2:28 "And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh;) When they pierced his side, it wasn't just so that his death would be proved, it was a sign fulfilling the Old Testament prophesy and foreshadowing the last days. It was a loud sign that he would be coming again...this time it won't be to die but he's coming for his bride. The only reason he waits is so that the lost can be brought into his kingdom.

Water is also symbolic of baptism/full submersion. It's not just about washing away the old...it's related to Noah and the Flood. He could have wiped us out completely and started over, but he didn't. It shows his grace and mercy.

Baptism is more than just laying down...it's the start of your public ministry - declaring God's grace to the world. It's our inauguration to our purpose...to our ministry. When Jesus was baptized, the Spirit descended upon him before he went into the wilderness. Water speaks of God's plan to join him in ministry. Even if you don't think so, you have a ministry...you don't have to be a pastor...has God ever done anything for you? Can you tell someone about it? Therein lies your ministry.

Hebrews 12:22-24 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
Jesus blood doesn't speak against us as the innocent blood of Abel did in Genesis 4. Jesus blood fixes the broken, restores us, and bridges the gap between us and the Father. His blood seals the deal...it shows that it is Finished. Nothing can overtake you. The world might keep talking but the blood speaks louder. His blood will never stop speaking.

The blood that was shed for us has already faced all temptations, struggles and sins so that we don't have to. (1 John 5:4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world— our faith.) Because we are followers of Christ, the blood has already won in our lives.

The blood speaks for us and to us. It gives us confidence, faith, and assurance. The blood cries out for our forgiveness. The blood of Jesus is ultimate and eternal. It is the once and for all payment for the redemption of humanity. The enemy tries to talk to us and lead us away, but the blood speaks louder and speaks freedom, hope and victory over our lies.

The cross wasn't God's fix or response to our sin...our sin didn't surprise him. It was his declaration of love toward us. Not just anyone's blood could hit the ground and accomplish everything...it had to be Jesus' blood. His blood spoke to the world that he would rise again. The water is the beginning and the blood is the end. If you are trying to live life on your own terms, let the blood speak to you...it will stand for you and cleanse you, it will never be quiet and it will never die.
