Countdown to Rekindle 2012

11 days until Rekindle!
Rekindle 2010: Session 2 - God Almighty by Mickey Connolly
1 Chronicles 29:10-13 Therefore David blessed the LORD in the presence of all the assembly. And David said: “Blessed are you, O LORD, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.
  • Omnipotence Explained (Genesis 17:1; Revelation 1:8)
    • Faith for doing great things in God addresses itself primarily to the fact that God is almighty.
    •  v.11 - Yours, O Lord, is the...power (and greatness and glory and victory and majesty)
Stephen Charnock (The existence and Attributes of God) - "The power is that ability and strength whereby He can bring to pass whatsoever He pleases, whatsoever His infinite wisdom may direct, and whatsoever the infinite purity of His will may resolve... As holiness is the beauty of all God's attributes, so power is that which gives life and action to all the perfections of the Divine nature. How vain would be the eternal counsels, if power did not step in to execute them. Without power His mercy would be but feeble pity. His promises an empty sound, His threatenings a mere scarecrow. God's power is like Himself: infinite, eternal, incomprehensible; it can neither be checked, restrained, nor frustrated by the creature."
    • God does whatever he pleases
      • Psalm 115:3; Job 42:2; Genesis 18:14
      • Nothing is too hard for God
Thomas Watson (A Body of Divinity, p. 78) - "His power is as large as His will."
    • God does all effortlessly
      • Isaiah 40:28-29
      • He doesn't struggle or strain
      • God never expends energy and if he did, that would mean he changed and he doesn't change.
A. W. Tozer - "All His acts are done without effort. He spends no energy that must be replenished."
    • God can do more than He has done
      • Matthew 19:26
      • We can never doubt God's power!
      • If something doesn't happen, it's not because God doesn't have the power - it's because it is not his will.
      • God's power is only limited by his will.
    • There are things God can't do
      • God can't be inconsistent with his character
      • God can't sin or will himself out of existence
      • God can't act in a logically inconsistent way
  • Omnipotence Exercised
    • v. 11-12 - All that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours...you are exalted as head of all...you rule over all...in your hand are might and power.
    • God's sovereignty is His unlimited, absolute power, authority and control over his creation. He is able to rule because He is all-powerful. Nothing in all of creation is able to successfully rebel against Him.
ISBE (p. 592) - "The divine power operates not merely in single concrete acts but is comprehensively related to the world. In nature and in history, in creation and redemption, this power produces, controls, and directs everything that comes to pass. Nothing in the realm of actual or conceivable things can withstand it, it extends and masters all details or reality, even the minutest and most recondite (hidden) sequences of cause and effect."
    • Nature
      • Creation
        • Nothing exists without God...nothing exists except God
        • God speaks "let it be" and there it was.
        • Creation is the most conspicuous display of God's power.
      • Miracles
    • Nations
      • 2 Chronicles 20:6
      • All that the Father gives me will come to me
    • Souls
      • John 6:37
      • There is no one too hard to save...we are all equally dead - it's not too hard for God.
      • God saved the most notorious murderer in history - the apostle Paul.
      • Who is that person in your life that you see as too hard to save? Remember that God is all mighty to save!
      • If God wants you, he will get you!
  • Omnipotence Experienced
    • v12 - In your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all.
    • Flows to us
      • God's power flows to us - the power to sustain us, keep us, and protect us.
    • Flows in us
      • Romans 8:11
      • God's power flows in us - power for a new life
      • The Holy Spirit
    • Flows through us
  • Application
    • In what specific areas will you begin trusting God for power to change?
      • Does trusting God in this way mean that you have no part in changing?
      • What part do you play in all of this?
    • How could you apply this message as a member of M28, i.e., how will God's power help you to fulfill the mission of this ministry?
Mickey said that if he used one word to describe his generation (the 70's) it would be 'radical' or 'passion'...and if he were to describe our generation today in one word it would be the word 'drift'. The number one goal of today's generation is to be rich and famous.

He shared the staggering statistic that in my generation - only 4% will stand for Christ. It broke my heart to hear that. There is a drift away from God in my generation...a drift into comfortable Christianity. The drift is subtle - there is a greater danger in the subtlety - much more danger than the clear lines of 'sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll' and 'Jesus freaks' of the 70's.

If you want to live a comfortable Christian life, you don't need power. It doesn't take power to drift...it takes power to go against the current and take a stand...it takes power and passion. Make your life count for something!
